Theological Themes in Deuteronomy

Most scholars agree that the book of Deuteronomy is of central importance in Old Testament theology, and in the overall theology of the Bible.  Bruce Waltke, a leading Old Testament scholar, went so far as to say, “Deuteronomy is the most important book in the Old Testament for writing an Old Testament theology.”[1]  He goes on, saying, “Deuteronomy has had greater consequences for human history than any other single book.  Its continuing influence is one of the major factors shaping the future of humanity.”[2]  At first glance, statements like these seem extreme.  His point, however, is that there are several unique features about Deuteronomy that make it important, not only… [more]
